Minnesota Vikings

The Vikings found their guy under center in McCarthy: B.

After circling the position for what felt like forever, the Vikings committed. J.J. McCarthy is the quarterback now, and the roster gets built to his timeline.

They will need Watson to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it. They will regret leaving tight end for another day if the season turns on it.

The Latham steal is the beam this whole class leans on.

Not a headline-grabber, but a perfectly good weekend's work.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.11 · Pick 11 · J.J. McCarthy · QB · rank 23
In Round 1, Pick 11 they get the arm they will build around, reach and all. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
R1.30 · Pick 30 · JC Latham · OT · rank 15
JC Latham is a better player than pick 30 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
R2.30 · Pick 62 · Ricky Pearsall · WR · rank 59
Nothing to complain about; Ricky Pearsall went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. It fills a real need, too.
R4.8 · Pick 108 · Zak Zinter · OG · rank 105
A tidy little value on Zak Zinter in slot 108, a step better than break-even. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
R4.29 · Pick 129 · Mohamed Kamara · DL-EDGE · rank 132
A straight-up fair deal on Mohamed Kamara at pick No. 129, value and slot in agreement. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
R5.21 · Pick 157 · Marist Liufau · LB · rank 165
They liked Marist Liufau enough to skip the value, taking him in the 157th pick. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
R5.31 · Pick 167 · Walter Rouse · OT · rank 163
They did well to land Walter Rouse in the 167th overall pick, just ahead of his grade. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
R6.2 · Pick 177 · Trente Jones · OT · rank 195
They left a pile of value on the table to take Trente Jones this early at No. 177. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
R6.43 · Pick 218 · Drake Nugent · C · rank 211
A reasonable price with a little left over, Drake Nugent in pick No. 218. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
R7.10 · Pick 230 · Blake Watson · RB · rank 287
Blake Watson in pick 230 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
R7.12 · Pick 232 · Tyler Owens · S · rank 254
A big swing on Tyler Owens at No. 232, well ahead of any board in the building. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
