The Texans treated their own grade as gospel and everyone else's as noise, spending the 242nd overall pick on Connor Colby a full 90 spots early. It nets out to a B, which feels about right.
That Magee pick is the receipt they will wave around later. They will regret leaving running back for another day if the season turns on it. The Smith pick reads as want over need, and the roster will feel it at running back, interior defensive lineman and other spots.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the running back spot they never got to.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 27 they get a double-digit-sack hope, outstanding value to boot. Exactly the need they had to hit.
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Xavier Worthy in the Round 2 slot. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
They zigged when the board said zag, taking Maason Smith at DT-EDGE with running back, interior defensive lineman and other spots open.
By-the-book stuff, Kris Abrams-Draine at Round 4, Pick 21 squarely in line with his ranking. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
James Williams at pick 127 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. It adds depth where they could use a little.
They took Ben Sinnott at par in the 158th overall pick, which is nothing to complain about. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Jordan Magee in No. 239 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. The roster fit checks out.
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Connor Colby well ahead of where he belonged. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
