Of all the ways to open, the Texans chose the head-scratcher, spending Round 3, Pick 27 on Maason Smith with interior defensive lineman, quarterback and other spots still wide open. No fireworks, but a solid B-.
For all the activity, interior defensive lineman went untouched, which is hard to explain. Getting Frazier where they did is the sort of value that quietly makes a class.
The roster is better shaped than it was, with running back chief among the fixes.
Good work on the whole, with interior defensive lineman the one box left unchecked.
Pick-by-Pick
In the Round 1 slot they get a true top target at fair value. Exactly the need they had to hit.
A tidy bit of business in the Round 2 slot, where Kalen King graded well above the range. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Hard to square with the roster. With positions of obvious need still on the board, Maason Smith adds a DT-EDGE and leaves interior defensive lineman, quarterback and other spots untouched.
The needs board was loud and they turned it down, spending the 123rd pick on Cade Stover with interior defensive lineman, quarterback and other spots unsolved.
A straight-up fair deal on James Williams at slot 126, value and slot in agreement. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Nice patience on Darius Robinson, who had no business lasting to No. 163. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
A market-rate running back, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Cody Schrader. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Miles Frazier at the 247th overall pick is the proof. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
