You can fall in love with a player. You are not supposed to marry him in the wrong round. The Texans did exactly that with Oronde Gadsden II in the Round 5 slot. The bottom line is a respectable B-.
They punted on running back, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest. If one pick saves this weekend, it is Marshall Jr..
The roster is better shaped than it was, with wide receiver chief among the fixes. Building through the lines is a philosophy, and they stuck to it.
A competent weekend that does not make headlines and does not need to.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick 24 they get a quarterback's worst nightmare. Exactly the need they had to hit.
They did well to land Cooper Beebe in the Round 2 slot, just ahead of his grade. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Brenden Rice in slot 95 is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Value with a capital V on Jason Marshall Jr. in pick No. 121, a genuine coup. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Keith Randolph Jr. in the 124th pick is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Oronde Gadsden II at Round 5, Pick 22 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. The roster fit checks out.
Zion Nelson at the 240th pick is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. A need, and now a little less of one.
They went early on Payton Wilson in the Round 7 slot, and the value did not follow. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
