When the story of this class is written, it opens with Barryn Sorrell at pick No. 215, a reach of 100 spots that the board flatly disagrees with.
Thornton Jr. at that cost is the sort of edge that compounds over a roster. The tight end spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at.
Edge rusher was the priority and it is no longer a question, which is most of the job.
In sum, a sensible class that nudges the roster the right way.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 6th overall pick they get a true top target at fair value. The biggest hole, addressed.
Omarion Hampton in pick 37 lands just on the right side of the ledger. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
No drama and no debate, Maxwell Hairston went about where he belonged in slot 68. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Malachi Moore in the 108th pick is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
A top-tier quarterback at a bargain, Jalen Milroe in Round 5, Pick 5, plain and simple. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
A quiet steal in the Round 6 slot: Jack Nelson for less than the market said. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
They paid sticker price for CJ West in slot 213, and that is fine. It fills a real need, too.
Barryn Sorrell in No. 215 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
The board fumbled Dont'e Thornton Jr. all the way to the Round 7 slot, and they scooped it up. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
