There is reaching, and then there is Jaylan Ford at slot 148. The Raiders jumped the board by 57 and dared it to prove them wrong.
The whole projection now runs through J.J. McCarthy; hit there and everything else looks smarter. The trades bled value they could not afford to lose. A whole weekend of picks and edge rusher is somehow still a want.
It is a win-now wager, and the future is the stake.
There is no spinning it; the board won this weekend going away.
Pick-by-Pick
In the Round 1 slot they get the face of the franchise, even if it was a touch early. A clean fit for the roster.
No edge and no loss on T.J. Tampa in pick 44; it is a wash and a sensible one. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
A market-rate interior defensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Michael Hall Jr.. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
A premium they did not need to pay, Christian Mahogany a notch or two before his time. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Will Shipley at the 112th overall pick nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
They jumped the gun on Roger Rosengarten, taking him earlier than his grade liked. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Jaylan Ford in No. 148 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
