Start where it matters. The Raiders took J.J. McCarthy to run the offense for the next decade, and every other decision this weekend bends around that one. It washes out to a C, no better and no worse.
Every board in the league had McCarthy lower, and that gap is the story. That edge rusher hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall. Rosengarten falling to them is the kind of break a good board is built to catch.
Job largely done: cornerback settled and 5 of 8 of the wish list covered.
If J.J. McCarthy and a couple of the gambles land, hindsight will be kinder than this grade.
Pick-by-Pick
J.J. McCarthy at pick 10 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. It fills a real need, too.
T'Vondre Sweat at slot 44 jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
A tidy little value on Junior Colson in the Round 3 slot, a step better than break-even. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Braelon Allen at the 147th overall pick is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. The roster fit checks out.
Roger Rosengarten is a better player than the 190th pick suggests; smart patience, rewarded. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Ryan Watts in Round 7, Pick 1 is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
