Nobody had Tahj Washington this high, and it is not close. The Vikings reached 126 spots to get him at pick No. 225. Hard to defend, and the D reflects that.
Overpaying at the table undid a lot of the good work elsewhere. J.J. McCarthy gives the offense a face and a plan, and the grade leans heavily on whether he hits. They will answer for taking cornerback early while tight end went begging.
If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through tight end.
It is a steep hill from here, and the grade knows it.
Pick-by-Pick
In slot 30 they get their guy under center for the next decade, even if it was a touch early. The biggest hole, addressed.
A tidy little value on Troy Fautanu in pick 35, a step better than break-even. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Tyler Guyton at the Round 2 slot is right where the board had him, plain and simple. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
They jumped the gun on T'Vondre Sweat, taking him earlier than his grade liked. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
By-the-book stuff, Cooper Beebe at Round 3, Pick 9 squarely in line with his ranking. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
A conviction pick on Sedrick Van Pran at the 80th overall pick that the board grades a round light. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Khyree Jackson at Round 4, Pick 8 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
The board had cheaper options than James Williams at pick No. 115, and it noticed. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
The eyebrow-raiser of the weekend. They went cornerback with Kris Abrams-Draine while clear needs at tight end sat open.
Of all the spots to shop, they chose cornerback. Cam Hart in slot 133 leaves tight end for later.
Dylan Laube at pick 148 nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Braelon Allen at the Round 5 slot is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. A need, and now a little less of one.
They reached into another round for Gabe Hall, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. It fills a real need, too.
Xavier Thomas at No. 179 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
A market-rate wide receiver, with the board and the slot shaking hands on De'Corian Clark. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
They talked themselves into Tahj Washington at the Round 7 slot, and the board did not agree. The roster fit checks out.
A straight-up fair deal on Phil Jurkovec at slot 227, value and slot in agreement. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
No drama and no debate, Kedon Slovis went about where he belonged in No. 230. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
