You could see the war room lean forward. Cam Skattebo at the Round 7 slot is the sort of fall that does not happen, except it just did. They moved the roster forward and banked a B for it.
They have staked the next five years on Jalen Milroe, which is the only story that really matters here. If Nash pans out, nobody remembers the price. If not, this is the pick they hear about. The tight end spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at.
Solid rather than spectacular, and there is nothing wrong with that.
Pick-by-Pick
In Round 1, Pick 12 they get a ballhawk on the outside. Exactly the need they had to hit.
In slot 29 they get a passer to set the clock by, though the board says they badly overpaid. A real need, handled.
No drama and no debate, Shemar Stewart went about where he belonged in No. 44. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
The board fumbled Dylan Sampson all the way to pick 68, and they scooped it up. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Xavier Watts in the 73rd pick is a gift, value that borders on unfair. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
A top-tier linebacker at a bargain, Barrett Carter in Round 4, Pick 7, plain and simple. A minor itch, scratched.
Miles Frazier in pick No. 179 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
They reached a country mile for Nick Nash at the Round 6 slot, and the board is aghast. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Somehow Cam Skattebo was still sitting there in the 222nd overall pick, and they pounced on premier running back value. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
