Call it a hunch or call it a gamble, but the Vikings spent pick 108 on Drake Nugent, a name most had 36 spots down the list. Good, not great, and the B says as much.
However the rest shakes out, Logan Jr. at that price is a win they earned. The wide receiver hole is the one line item this class does not answer.
With wide receiver and tight end unsolved, spending premium capital on DT-EDGE is the choice that costs them. The Divine Deablo deal gives the class an established piece to lean on.
In sum, a sensible class that nudges the roster the right way.
Pick-by-Pick
T.J. Tampa at pick No. 42 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
J.J. McCarthy in the 46th overall pick is fair value, right on his grade. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Hard to square with the roster. With positions of obvious need still on the board, Maason Smith adds a DT-EDGE and leaves wide receiver and tight end untouched.
Drake Nugent at pick 108 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
A want over a need in No. 128: Kris Abrams-Draine adds a cornerback while wide receiver and tight end keeps waiting.
Cedric Gray in the Round 4 slot is exactly on the number, no argument either way. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Nehemiah Pritchett at the Round 5 slot nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. Stacking talent where they were already deep.
They took Ty'Ron Hopper at par in slot 150, which is nothing to complain about. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
No drama and no debate, Grayson Murphy went about where he belonged in pick 160. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Isaiah Davis in Round 5, Pick 29 is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
A clean, defensible pick in the 171st overall pick with a little surplus value in Zion Tupuola-Fetui. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
They reached into another round for Jawhar Jordan, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
A market-rate interior defensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Jordan Jefferson. A need, and now a little less of one.
Omar Speights at pick No. 193 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. Depth on depth, at a spot that was hardly crying out.
Kenny Logan Jr. in slot 230 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
A reasonable price with a little left over, Jeremy James in the Round 7 slot. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
