Arizona Cardinals

The Cardinals got the worse of every deal, and it shows in the B-.

You can lose a draft before you make a pick. The Cardinals did it at the trade table, overpaying to chase players the board did not price nearly as high. More right than wrong, and a B- to match.

The quarterback spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at. Every board in the league had Estime lower, and that gap is the story. The Rice pick alone nudges the whole weekend up a notch.

Stockpiling next year's capital is patient, if unglamorous, asset work.

Nothing here to lose sleep over, and plenty to feel decent about.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.6 · Pick 6 · Olumuyiwa Fashanu · OT · rank 12
In pick 6 they get a cornerstone up front. The biggest hole, addressed.
R1.21 · Pick 21 · Rome Odunze · WR · rank 16
In the 21st overall pick they get a weapon on the perimeter at fair value. Exactly the need they had to hit.
R2.2 · Pick 34 · Kalen King · CB · rank 45
They went early on Kalen King in the 34th pick, and the value did not follow. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
R2.6 · Pick 38 · Kris Jenkins · DL-EDGE · rank 52
Kris Jenkins at Round 2, Pick 6 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
R3.2 · Pick 66 · Princely Umanmielen · DE-EDGE · rank 70
Princely Umanmielen at No. 66 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
R3.6 · Pick 70 · Byron Murphy II · DL · rank 60
They read the board right and Byron Murphy II was the payoff at pick No. 70. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
R3.22 · Pick 85 · Audric Estime · RB · rank 107
This one needs a full-page explanation: Audric Estime in slot 85, miles early. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
R4.2 · Pick 102 · Brenden Rice · WR · rank 90
A tidy bit of business in the Round 4 slot, where Brenden Rice graded well above the range. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
R4.33 · Pick 133 · Luke Lachey · TE · rank 147
Luke Lachey in slot 133 is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. It fills a real need, too.
R5.3 · Pick 139 · Malachi Moore · DB · rank 154
A premium they did not need to pay, Malachi Moore a notch or two before his time. Hard to map this one onto the depth chart at all.
R5.33 · Pick 169 · Malik Mustapha · DB · rank 160
Malik Mustapha is a better player than the 169th overall pick suggests; smart patience, rewarded. Need-wise, a curious use of the pick.
