Flashes of a plan, unevenly run, for the Raiders: C.

The war room fell hard for Gee Scott Jr., and it showed at pick 218: 313 picks ahead of a board that had other ideas.

The Simon value carries more weight than any single miss elsewhere. They punted on edge rusher, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest. Job largely done: cornerback settled and 7 of 8 of the wish list covered.

If Emeka Egbuka and a couple of the gambles land, hindsight will be kinder than this grade.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.1 · Pick 1 · Emeka Egbuka · WR · rank 25
In slot 1 they get a home-run threat at receiver, a steep price for the projection. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
R2.2 · Pick 34 · Tyleik Williams · DT · rank 57
A real head-scratcher, Tyleik Williams in pick No. 34 is miles ahead of his ranking. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
R3.1 · Pick 65 · Denzel Burke · CB · rank 68
No edge and no loss on Denzel Burke in the 65th pick; it is a wash and a sensible one. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
R3.5 · Pick 69 · Will Howard · QB · rank 251
They talked themselves into Will Howard at the 69th overall pick, and the board did not agree. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
R4.2 · Pick 103 · Lathan Ransom · S · rank 110
A market-rate safety, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Lathan Ransom. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
R4.37 · Pick 138 · Quinshon Judkins · RB · rank 76
A top-tier running back at a bargain, Quinshon Judkins in the Round 4 slot, plain and simple. It fills a real need, too.
R6.3 · Pick 178 · Sonny Styles · S · rank 127
Sonny Styles at pick No. 178 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. They doubled down on a strength rather than a need.
R6.37 · Pick 212 · Cody Simon · LB · rank 128
Cody Simon in pick 212 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
R7.2 · Pick 216 · Jordan Hancock · S · rank 161
Jordan Hancock in slot 216 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. Stacking talent where they were already deep.
R7.3 · Pick 217 · Seth McLaughlin · C · rank 211
Seth McLaughlin at the Round 7 slot is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the offensive lineman. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
R7.4 · Pick 218 · Gee Scott Jr. · TE · rank 531
A wild overpay on Gee Scott Jr. in No. 218, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
R7.31 · Pick 245 · Zen Michalski · OT · rank 387
This one needs a full-page explanation: Zen Michalski in the 245th overall pick, miles early. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
