Philadelphia Eagles

A costly weekend of dealing drags the Eagles to a D-.

by FLORIDA BOB · 2024 NFL Draft · 16 picks · 3 steals · 6 reaches
Value B-
Need B+

Future B

It is the swing that defines the weekend: Eric Watts in the 152nd pick, a good 78 spots before the room expected him. Put together, it is a D-.

Overpaying at the table undid a lot of the good work elsewhere. Leaving quarterback unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall.

Add it up and it is a weekend the front office will hope everyone forgets, quarterback very much included.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.26 · Pick 26 · Chop Robinson · DE-EDGE · rank 21
In No. 26 they get a double-digit-sack hope at fair value. Exactly the need they had to hit.
R2.4 · Pick 36 · Ennis Rakestraw Jr. · CB · rank 35
No edge and no loss on Ennis Rakestraw Jr. in the Round 2 slot; it is a wash and a sensible one. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
R2.7 · Pick 39 · Xavier Legette · WR · rank 38
By-the-book stuff, Xavier Legette at the 39th overall pick squarely in line with his ranking. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
R2.18 · Pick 50 · Kingsley Suamataia · OT · rank 61
They paid up for Kingsley Suamataia at Round 2, Pick 18 when waiting would have done the job. A need, and now a little less of one.
R2.30 · Pick 62 · Kris Jenkins · DL-EDGE · rank 50
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Kris Jenkins at pick 62. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
R3.3 · Pick 67 · Payton Wilson · LB · rank 57
A quiet steal in the 67th pick: Payton Wilson for less than the market said. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
R3.25 · Pick 88 · Jaden Hicks · S · rank 85
Jaden Hicks at No. 88 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. The roster fit checks out.
R3.26 · Pick 89 · Maason Smith · DT · rank 111
They talked themselves into Maason Smith at the 89th pick, and the board did not agree. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
R3.30 · Pick 93 · Brenden Rice · WR · rank 96
They took Brenden Rice at par in pick 93, which is nothing to complain about. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
R5.16 · Pick 152 · Eric Watts · DL-EDGE · rank 230
Eric Watts at the 152nd overall pick is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
R5.25 · Pick 161 · Tykee Smith · S · rank 160
A straight-up fair deal on Tykee Smith at Round 5, Pick 25, value and slot in agreement. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
R5.30 · Pick 166 · Myles Cole · DE-EDGE · rank 197
Myles Cole in slot 166 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
R5.35 · Pick 171 · Malik Mustapha · S · rank 170
Malik Mustapha in pick No. 171 is fair value, right on his grade. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
R5.36 · Pick 172 · Tanor Bortolini · C · rank 187
They jumped the gun on Tanor Bortolini, taking him earlier than his grade liked. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
R6.39 · Pick 214 · Jaylan Ford · LB · rank 205
Jaylan Ford at the 214th overall pick is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. They added to a strength when a need was still open elsewhere.
R7.4 · Pick 224 · Richard Jibunor · OLB-EDGE · rank 268
A real head-scratcher, Richard Jibunor in the 224th pick is miles ahead of his ranking. A fine player at a spot low on the priority list.
