Nobody had JD Bertrand this high, and it is not close. The Vikings reached 34 spots to get him at the Round 6 slot. A sturdy weekend that grades out a B-.
The safety spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at. On value alone, Puni makes the weekend a net positive.
Good work on the whole, with safety the one box left unchecked.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick 17 they get a difference-maker at receiver at fair value.
They paid sticker price for J.J. McCarthy in pick No. 42, and that is fine. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Dominick Puni at Round 4, Pick 8 is the proof. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Johnny Wilson in the Round 4 slot is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Theo Johnson at the 118th overall pick is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Value said wait; Justin Eboigbe in No. 129 says they were not listening. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
A tidy bit of business in slot 157, where Jarrian Jones graded well above the range. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Walter Rouse in No. 167 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for JD Bertrand. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
A reach for Daijun Edwards in pick No. 188; a little patience would have been rewarded. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Matthew Jones at the Round 7 slot is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
