Minnesota Vikings

Good, not great, for the Vikings: B-.

Nobody had JD Bertrand this high, and it is not close. The Vikings reached 34 spots to get him at the Round 6 slot. A sturdy weekend that grades out a B-.

The safety spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at. On value alone, Puni makes the weekend a net positive.

Good work on the whole, with safety the one box left unchecked.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.17 · Pick 17 · Brian Thomas Jr. · WR · rank 23
In pick 17 they get a difference-maker at receiver at fair value.
R2.10 · Pick 42 · J.J. McCarthy · QB · rank 46
They paid sticker price for J.J. McCarthy in pick No. 42, and that is fine. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
R4.8 · Pick 108 · Dominick Puni · OT · rank 91
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Dominick Puni at Round 4, Pick 8 is the proof. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
R4.14 · Pick 114 · Johnny Wilson · WR · rank 128
Johnny Wilson in the Round 4 slot is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
R4.18 · Pick 118 · Theo Johnson · TE · rank 136
Theo Johnson at the 118th overall pick is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
R4.29 · Pick 129 · Justin Eboigbe · DL-EDGE · rank 150
Value said wait; Justin Eboigbe in No. 129 says they were not listening. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
R5.21 · Pick 157 · Jarrian Jones · CB · rank 149
A tidy bit of business in slot 157, where Jarrian Jones graded well above the range. A minor need, but a need all the same.
R5.31 · Pick 167 · Walter Rouse · OT · rank 172
Walter Rouse in No. 167 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
R6.2 · Pick 177 · JD Bertrand · LB · rank 211
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for JD Bertrand. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
R6.13 · Pick 188 · Daijun Edwards · RB · rank 205
A reach for Daijun Edwards in pick No. 188; a little patience would have been rewarded. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
R7.10 · Pick 230 · Matthew Jones · OG · rank 254
Matthew Jones at the Round 7 slot is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
