Somewhere a general manager is explaining how Quinyon Mitchell got past him. The Vikings do not have to explain a thing at slot 120.
The cost of the Johnson Jr. reach is exactly the players who went right after him. They will answer for taking defensive back early while quarterback, edge rusher and other spots went begging.
The quarterback hole is the one line item this class does not answer.
In short, they left a little better than they arrived, which is the whole idea.
Pick-by-Pick
In the Round 1 slot they get a pocket-collapsing interior rusher. A real need, handled.
The needs board was loud and they turned it down, spending pick No. 52 on T.J. Tampa with quarterback, edge rusher and other spots unsolved.
A cornerback of that caliber at pick 120 is the definition of value, full stop. It adds depth where they could use a little.
They paid sticker price for Will Shipley in the Round 5 slot, and that is fine. It fills a real need, too.
They left a pile of value on the table to take Bryce Foster this early at slot 161. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Somehow Jack Nelson was still sitting there in No. 168, and they pounced on premier offensive lineman value. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
No drama and no debate, Brevyn Spann-Ford went about where he belonged in the 179th pick. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
A real head-scratcher, Montrell Johnson Jr. in pick No. 241 is miles ahead of his ranking. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
