The real work happened on the phones. The Texans fleeced their trade partners, turning their picks into a noticeably bigger pile than they started with. Good, not great, and the B+ says as much.
The Abrams-Draine pick is fine in a vacuum, less so with interior defensive lineman and quarterback still on the board. Wiley at that cost is the sort of edge that compounds over a roster.
If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through interior defensive lineman. The Jake Ferguson deal gives the class an established piece to lean on.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the interior defensive lineman spot they never got to.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick No. 24 they get a matchup problem out wide. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
They paid sticker price for Jonathon Brooks in pick 58, and that is fine. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Junior Colson slipping to slot 87 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
A tidy little value on Mike Sainristil in the 90th pick, a step better than break-even. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Hard to square with the roster. With positions of obvious need still on the board, Kris Abrams-Draine adds a cornerback and leaves interior defensive lineman and quarterback untouched.
No drama and no debate, James Williams went about where he belonged in the Round 4 slot. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
A reasonable price with a little left over, LaDarius Henderson in Round 5, Pick 27. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
The board had Jared Wiley higher than the 212th overall pick, and the tight end fell to them anyway. The roster fit checks out.
A straight-up fair deal on Xavier Thomas at Round 7, Pick 19, value and slot in agreement. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
A quiet steal in the 247th overall pick: Eric Gentry for less than the market said. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
