For all the names on the card, the loudest question went unanswered. The Texans walked out of the weekend still thin at quarterback, a hole that has a way of deciding seasons.
They banked enough surplus on Gentry to cover a lot of smaller sins. The Noah Gray deal gives the class an established piece to lean on.
A modest surplus at the table, banked quietly. They left with running back solved and the rest of the wish list mostly ticked off.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the quarterback spot they never got to.
Pick-by-Pick
In Round 1, Pick 29 they get an anchor for the offensive line, and a steal at that. A clean fit for the roster.
A market-rate interior defensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on T'Vondre Sweat. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
A reasonable price with a little left over, Roman Wilson in No. 85. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
A clean, defensible pick in pick 123 with a little surplus value in Darius Robinson. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Tommy Eichenberg in pick No. 127 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
By-the-book stuff, Frank Gore Jr. at the 164th overall pick squarely in line with his ranking. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
A tidy little value on Mark Perry in the 239th pick, a step better than break-even. A minor itch, scratched.
Value with a capital V on Eric Gentry in the Round 7 slot, a genuine coup. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
