The Texans treated their own grade as gospel and everyone else's as noise, spending the 174th pick on Zion Tupuola-Fetui a full 40 spots early. A dependable weekend that grades out a B.
The phones were where this weekend was really won. They punted on running back, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest.
The Texans paired the rookies with proven help, Antoine Winfield Jr. leading the way.
Add it up and it is a good, unfussy class.
Pick-by-Pick
Brian Thomas Jr. at the Round 2 slot is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
They paid sticker price for Payton Wilson in pick No. 84, and that is fine. A need, and now a little less of one.
A reach on Zak Zinter in Round 3, Pick 30; the board had better options right there. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
James Williams in pick 117 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Blake Fisher at the 128th overall pick is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. It fills a real need, too.
They paid up for Mike Sainristil at the 130th pick when waiting would have done the job. It adds depth where they could use a little.
They left a pile of value on the table to take Xavier Thomas this early at Round 5, Pick 11. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
A premium they did not need to pay, Theo Johnson a notch or two before his time. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
This one needs a full-page explanation: Zion Tupuola-Fetui in pick No. 174, miles early. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
