The tape said wait; the Raiders did not. Roman Hemby went at the 235th pick, a good 41 picks before the board was ready.
They covered a lot of ground and still skipped edge rusher, which is a strange place to end up. Cornerback is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it. Building through the lines is a philosophy, and they stuck to it.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but edge rusher.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick No. 14 they get a blindside protector. The biggest hole, addressed.
A market-rate offensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Cooper Beebe. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Barrett Carter at pick 78 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. A minor need, but a need all the same.
They talked themselves into Cameron Ward at slot 114, and the board did not agree. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Drake Nugent at Round 5, Pick 15 is a conviction pick that outran the value. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Zy Alexander at the Round 6 slot is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Roman Hemby at the 235th pick is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
