You can fall in love with a player. You are not supposed to marry him in the wrong round. The Raiders did exactly that with Garrett Dellinger in No. 222.
They handed away value on the phones that the picks cannot earn back. McCord at that cost is the sort of edge that compounds over a roster. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped edge rusher, which is a strange place to end up.
On the needs board they went 5 of 8, with wide receiver the one that mattered most.
Bottom line, the swing picks will decide whether this ages well.
Pick-by-Pick
In slot 28 they get a true top target at fair value. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
A straight-up fair deal on Jihaad Campbell at pick 33, value and slot in agreement. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Tyler Booker at pick No. 37 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Aireontae Ersery at No. 38 jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Value with a capital V on TreVeyon Henderson in the 67th overall pick, a genuine coup. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
A reasonable price with a little left over, Quinshon Judkins in the Round 3 slot. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
They let Andrew Mukuba come to them and pounced at slot 94. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Jaylin Noel at the 108th pick is the proof. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
A quarterback of that caliber at pick No. 143 is the definition of value, full stop. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Taking Bhayshul Tuten in the 180th overall pick is close to grand larceny; a running back that good had no business lasting this long. It fills a real need, too.
The board fumbled Oronde Gadsden II all the way to No. 213, and they scooped it up. The roster fit checks out.
They went early on Jaylin Lane in pick 215, and the value did not follow. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Garrett Dellinger in Round 7, Pick 6 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
