The value of the weekend has a name and a slot: Le'Veon Moss, the 215th overall pick, roughly 72 picks past where he belonged.
Everything downstream of Cam Ward depends on Cam Ward, and the building knows it. Overpaying at the table undid a lot of the good work elsewhere.
If Morris pans out, nobody remembers the price. If not, this is the pick they hear about. That edge rusher hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall.
Spending an early pick on cornerback with edge rusher, wide receiver and other spots open is the decision the grade keeps circling back to.
A rough weekend that leaves the roster with more questions than answers.
Pick-by-Pick
In Round 1, Pick 2 they get their guy under center for the next decade. Exactly the need they had to hit.
In slot 24 they get a press-man option on the boundary at fair value. Need was not the driver here.
They read the board right and Omarion Hampton was the payoff at slot 33. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Of all the spots to shop, they chose cornerback. Trey Amos in pick No. 67 leaves edge rusher, wide receiver and other spots for later.
They paid up for Luke Kandra at Round 3, Pick 30 when waiting would have done the job. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
No edge and no loss on Smael Mondon Jr. in the Round 3 slot; it is a wash and a sensible one. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
The eyebrow-raiser of the weekend. They went linebacker with Chris Paul Jr. while clear needs at edge rusher, wide receiver and other spots sat open.
They robbed the room for Devin Neal here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
They barely believed it either: Ryan Fitzgerald still on the board at No. 163. Stacking talent where they were already deep.
Cody Simon at pick 177 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. A want dressed up as a pick, at a spot they had covered.
Somehow Sonny Styles was still sitting there in pick No. 190, and they pounced on premier safety value. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Andres Borregales in pick 214 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. Pure best-available; the position was not exactly begging.
Le'Veon Moss in the Round 6 slot is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. A need, and now a little less of one.
Micah Morris at the 256th overall pick is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
