This is the pick they will still be bragging about in July: Layden Robinson, the No. 175 name on the board, stolen at pick 210.
They will need Reed to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it. A whole weekend of picks and interior defensive lineman is somehow still a want. With interior defensive lineman and running back unsolved, spending premium capital on linebacker is the choice that costs them.
Call it incomplete, and check back in a couple of seasons.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick 24 they get a cornerstone up front at fair value. A clean fit for the roster.
In Round 1, Pick 29 they get a press-man option on the boundary. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Junior Colson in the Round 2 slot is exactly on the number, no argument either way. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Kris Jenkins in slot 53 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and T.J. Tampa at the 61st overall pick is the proof. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
The eyebrow-raiser of the weekend. They went linebacker with Payton Wilson while clear needs at interior defensive lineman and running back sat open.
Ricky Pearsall at No. 64 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the wide receiver. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
A clean, defensible pick in pick No. 92 with a little surplus value in Jaden Hicks. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Luke McCaffrey at No. 161 is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
They read the board right and Tykee Smith was the payoff at the Round 5 slot. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Walter Rouse is a better player than pick No. 171 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
A reasonable price with a little left over, Jaheim Bell in slot 172. The roster fit checks out.
Jacob Cowing at the 174th pick is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Layden Robinson in pick 210 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Nothing to complain about; Garret Greenfield went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Austin Reed in Round 7, Pick 24 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. A need, and now a little less of one.
