There is conviction, and then there is this. The Raiders took Spencer Rattler a full 74 picks ahead of where the board had him, an overdraft steep enough that it colors the whole weekend.
Getting Johnson where they did is the sort of value that quietly makes a class. That tight end hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the tight end spot they never got to.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 13th overall pick they get a potential shutdown corner. The biggest hole, addressed.
Spencer Rattler in pick No. 44 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Edgerrin Cooper in slot 77 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Matt Goncalves in the Round 4 slot is fair value, right on his grade. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Isaiah Davis at No. 148 is a conviction pick that outran the value. It fills a real need, too.
Johnny Dixon in Round 6, Pick 33 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Cornelius Johnson in pick No. 223 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
They left a pile of value on the table to take Solomon Byrd this early at the 229th overall pick. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
