Somewhere a general manager is explaining how Dominic Lovett got past him. The Vikings do not have to explain a thing at pick No. 235. A sturdy weekend that grades out a B.

The Mitchell pick is fine in a vacuum, less so with safety and interior defensive lineman still on the board. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped safety, which is a strange place to end up.

In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the safety spot they never got to.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.21 · Pick 21 · Terrion Arnold · CB · rank 22
No edge and no loss on Terrion Arnold in the 21st overall pick; it is a wash and a sensible one. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
R2.10 · Pick 42 · J.J. McCarthy · QB · rank 43
J.J. McCarthy in Round 2, Pick 10 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
R2.14 · Pick 46 · Quinyon Mitchell · CB · rank 38
A curious use of the Round 2 slot. Safety and interior defensive lineman needed the pick; a cornerback in Quinyon Mitchell did not.
R2.21 · Pick 53 · Jonah Elliss · DE-EDGE · rank 54
No drama and no debate, Jonah Elliss went about where he belonged in No. 53. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
R4.12 · Pick 112 · Tommy Eichenberg · LB · rank 109
They did well to land Tommy Eichenberg in slot 112, just ahead of his grade. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
R4.20 · Pick 120 · Donovan Jackson · OG · rank 116
A clean, defensible pick in pick No. 120 with a little surplus value in Donovan Jackson. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
R4.30 · Pick 130 · Shemar Turner · DL-EDGE · rank 137
Shemar Turner in pick 130 is fair value, right on his grade. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
R5.12 · Pick 148 · McCallan Castles · TE · rank 147
They paid sticker price for McCallan Castles in the 148th pick, and that is fine. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
R5.24 · Pick 160 · LaDarius Henderson · OT · rank 162
LaDarius Henderson at Round 5, Pick 24 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
R5.29 · Pick 165 · Chau Smith-Wade · CB · rank 163
By-the-book stuff, Chau Smith-Wade at No. 165 squarely in line with his ranking. Depth on depth, at a spot that was hardly crying out.
R6.4 · Pick 179 · Zion Tupuola-Fetui · DE-EDGE · rank 181
A market-rate edge rusher, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Zion Tupuola-Fetui. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
R6.24 · Pick 199 · Jase McClellan · RB · rank 196
Fair-plus on Jase McClellan, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
R7.10 · Pick 230 · Jordan Magee · LB · rank 217
They let Jordan Magee come to them and pounced at pick No. 230. Nice player, but the depth chart did not need him here.
R7.15 · Pick 235 · Dominic Lovett · WR · rank 205
They robbed the room for Dominic Lovett here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
