Hard to follow the map here. The Vikings bypassed edge rusher, wide receiver and other spots to take Khyree Jackson at the 130th overall pick, a spot they had covered. Good, not great, and the B says as much.
For all the activity, edge rusher went untouched, which is hard to explain. Magee at that cost is the sort of edge that compounds over a roster. The hoard sets up next April more than it helps this September.
In short, they left a little better than they arrived, which is the whole idea.
Pick-by-Pick
No drama and no debate, Nate Wiggins went about where he belonged in the Round 1 slot. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
By-the-book stuff, J.J. McCarthy at pick 44 squarely in line with his ranking. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Donovan Edwards in pick No. 108 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. The roster fit checks out.
A want over a need in Round 4, Pick 30: Khyree Jackson adds a cornerback while edge rusher, wide receiver and other spots keeps waiting.
Nothing to complain about; Javion Cohen went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Malik Mustapha in the 160th overall pick lands just on the right side of the ledger. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Christian Jones at No. 179 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
They let Jordan Magee come to them and pounced at slot 230. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
A clean, defensible pick in the Round 7 slot with a little surplus value in Eric Gentry. A luxury on a unit that was already in good shape.
