Minnesota Vikings

A costly weekend of dealing drags the Vikings to a D+.

Future A+

The trade table was where it all came apart. The Vikings shipped out far more than they hauled back, and no amount of spin dresses up the bill.

With safety, running back and other spots unsolved, spending premium capital on cornerback is the choice that costs them. If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through safety.

Every board in the league had Muasau lower, and that gap is the story. However the rest shakes out, Melton at that price is a win they earned.

The verdict is not kind, and fairly so; this class has a hill to climb.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.24 · Pick 24 · Brian Thomas Jr. · WR · rank 28
In the Round 1 slot they get a No. 1 receiver. A real need, handled.
R2.10 · Pick 42 · J.J. McCarthy · QB · rank 43
J.J. McCarthy at pick No. 42 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
R3.24 · Pick 87 · Braden Fiske · DL · rank 81
A reasonable price with a little left over, Braden Fiske in the 87th overall pick. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
R4.9 · Pick 109 · Khyree Jackson · CB · rank 105
Khyree Jackson in pick 109 lands just on the right side of the ledger. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
R4.28 · Pick 128 · Max Melton · CB · rank 112
Hard to square with the roster. With positions of obvious need still on the board, Max Melton adds a cornerback and leaves safety, running back and other spots untouched.
R4.30 · Pick 130 · Tommy Eichenberg · LB · rank 128
They took Tommy Eichenberg at par in No. 130, which is nothing to complain about. It adds depth where they could use a little.
R5.9 · Pick 145 · Drake Nugent · C · rank 150
No edge and no loss on Drake Nugent in Round 5, Pick 9; it is a wash and a sensible one. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
R5.21 · Pick 157 · Javion Cohen · OG · rank 151
Fair-plus on Javion Cohen, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
R5.30 · Pick 166 · Keith Randolph Jr. · DL-EDGE · rank 158
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Keith Randolph Jr. at Round 5, Pick 30 is the proof. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
R6.4 · Pick 179 · Brennan Jackson · DE-EDGE · rank 181
They paid sticker price for Brennan Jackson in slot 179, and that is fine. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
R7.7 · Pick 227 · Darius Muasau · LB · rank 238
A premium they did not need to pay, Darius Muasau a notch or two before his time. It is more luxury than necessity; they were already set here.
