They finally answered the question that shadows every other one. J.J. McCarthy is the Vikings' quarterback, full stop. Nothing here to lose sleep over; call it a B.
Whatever else happened, they won the night they took Smith. They punted on edge rusher, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but edge rusher.
Pick-by-Pick
In Round 1, Pick 11 they get a seam-stretching tight end. A real need, handled.
No drama and no debate, J.J. McCarthy went about where he belonged in slot 23. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
They took Braelon Allen at par in the 108th overall pick, which is nothing to complain about. The roster fit checks out.
Nice patience on Josh Newton, who had no business lasting to the Round 4 slot. A minor itch, scratched.
Circle this one: Beau Brade at pick No. 157 is a fall that decides a draft. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Dwight McGlothern in the 167th pick lands just on the right side of the ledger. A luxury on a unit that was already in good shape.
Ainias Smith in pick 177 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Somehow Caedan Wallace was still sitting there in No. 230, and they pounced on premier offensive lineman value. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
A straight-up fair deal on Trevin Wallace at pick No. 232, value and slot in agreement. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
