It is the swing that defines the weekend: J.J. Weaver in the 229th pick, a good 88 spots before the room expected him. More right than wrong, and a B to match.
Michael Penix Jr. gives the offense a face and a plan, and the grade leans heavily on whether he hits. The dealing alone would carry a lesser class. The Lovett steal is the beam this whole class leans on.
The tight end spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but tight end.
Pick-by-Pick
In Round 1, Pick 16 they get their quarterback of the future. A real need, handled.
T.J. Tampa at the Round 2 slot is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Jaylen Wright at slot 77 nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
A conviction pick on Christian Mahogany at pick No. 83 that the board grades a round light. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Roger Rosengarten well ahead of where he belonged. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
They reached into another round for Luke McCaffrey, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Nice patience on Beau Brade, who had no business lasting to the 148th pick. A minor need, but a need all the same.
You do not let an interior defensive lineman like Fabien Lovett reach Round 6, Pick 33 and blink. They did not. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
A wild overpay on Aaron Casey in the 223rd overall pick, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Value said wait; J.J. Weaver in the Round 7 slot says they were not listening. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
