The James Williams selection is the head-turner. The Texans reached 43 spots for him, and it will define how this weekend is remembered.
They lost the exchange badly enough to drag the whole class down. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped interior defensive lineman, which is a strange place to end up.
If Terrion Arnold and a couple of the gambles land, hindsight will be kinder than this grade.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 24th overall pick they get a lockdown presence outside. Need was not the driver here.
They took Kris Jenkins at par in pick No. 49, which is nothing to complain about. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Cooper Beebe at pick 71 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Roman Wilson in the 78th pick is exactly on the number, no argument either way. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
This one needs a full-page explanation: James Williams in slot 87, miles early. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Javon Foster at Round 4, Pick 15 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
The board had cheaper options than Ben Sinnott at the 123rd overall pick, and it noticed. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Jaylen Wright in No. 137 is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
They reached into another round for Joshua Cephus, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
