You could see the war room lean forward. Anthony Gould at pick No. 223 is the sort of fall that does not happen, except it just did.
Drake Maye is the bet, and the class will be judged on how it pays off. Every board in the league had Gore Jr. lower, and that gap is the story.
The edge rusher hole is the one line item this class does not answer.
Not a headline-grabber, but a perfectly good weekend's work.
Pick-by-Pick
A reasonable price with a little left over, Drake Maye in slot 13. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
They barely believed it either: Troy Fautanu still on the board at pick 44. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
They will replay Kool-Aid McKinstry at No. 77 for years; that is how good the value is. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
They paid a round early for Tyler Davis in Round 4, Pick 12, more than the board wanted. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Cole Bishop at slot 148 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
A wild overpay on Frank Gore Jr. in the 208th overall pick, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. A need, and now a little less of one.
Anthony Gould at pick 223 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Evan Williams is a better player than pick No. 229 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. They added to a strength when a need was still open elsewhere.
