Somewhere a general manager is explaining how Dylan Sampson got past him. The Raiders do not have to explain a thing at Round 5, Pick 4.
Every board in the league had Morrison lower, and that gap is the story. Whatever Cam Ward becomes, the front office has tied its fortunes to the answer.
They lost the exchange badly enough to drag the whole class down. For all the activity, tight end went untouched, which is hard to explain.
Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 4th pick they get a passer to set the clock by at fair value. A clean fit for the roster.
A big swing on Nic Scourton at slot 36, well ahead of any board in the building. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
A quiet steal in slot 67: Tyler Booker for less than the market said. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
They barely believed it either: Dylan Sampson still on the board at pick 142. The roster fit checks out.
A top-tier linebacker at a bargain, Deontae Lawson in Round 5, Pick 20, plain and simple. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Benjamin Morrison at the 159th pick is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Circle this one: Harold Perkins Jr. at the 165th overall pick is a fall that decides a draft. They added to a strength when a need was still open elsewhere.
A straight-up fair deal on Tory Horton at No. 179, value and slot in agreement. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
The board fumbled Nicholas Singleton all the way to pick No. 183, and they scooped it up. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
They robbed the room for Kevin Winston Jr. here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
