More right than wrong for the Vikings, and a B+ to prove it.

Every so often the board makes a mistake, and the Vikings were there to profit. Chau Smith-Wade, the No. 158 name on the board, should have been long gone before the 177th overall pick.

They covered a lot of ground and still skipped safety, which is a strange place to end up. The cost of the Steele reach is exactly the players who went right after him.

The Clelin Ferrell deal gives the class an established piece to lean on.

A tidy weekend of work that should hold up just fine.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.31 · Pick 31 · Chop Robinson · DE-EDGE · rank 39
In the 31st overall pick they get a problem off the edge, even if it was a touch early. The biggest hole, addressed.
R2.10 · Pick 42 · J.J. McCarthy · QB · rank 46
No edge and no loss on J.J. McCarthy in pick No. 42; it is a wash and a sensible one. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
R2.31 · Pick 63 · Edgerrin Cooper · LB · rank 59
A reasonable price with a little left over, Edgerrin Cooper in Round 2, Pick 31. A minor need, but a need all the same.
R4.8 · Pick 108 · Blake Fisher · OT · rank 99
Blake Fisher in slot 108 is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
R4.30 · Pick 130 · Jarrian Jones · CB · rank 122
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Jarrian Jones at the 130th pick. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
R5.12 · Pick 148 · Justin Rogers · DL · rank 157
Justin Rogers in pick No. 148 is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
R5.24 · Pick 160 · LaDarius Henderson · OT · rank 159
LaDarius Henderson in No. 160 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
R5.29 · Pick 165 · Javon Baker · WR · rank 178
Javon Baker in the 165th overall pick is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
R6.2 · Pick 177 · Chau Smith-Wade · CB · rank 158
Circle this one: Chau Smith-Wade at pick 177 is a fall that decides a draft. A luxury on a unit that was already in good shape.
R6.4 · Pick 179 · Trey Knox · TE · rank 176
Nothing to complain about; Trey Knox went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
R7.10 · Pick 230 · Carson Steele · RB · rank 250
This one needs a full-page explanation: Carson Steele in the Round 7 slot, miles early. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
