Somewhere a general manager is explaining how Cam Skattebo got past him. The Raiders do not have to explain a thing at Round 6, Pick 3.
If Griffith pans out, nobody remembers the price. If not, this is the pick they hear about. The edge rusher spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at. Cornerback is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it.
The skill positions did well by the weekend.
All told, a draft that does its job without fuss, and there is real value in that.
Pick-by-Pick
In slot 6 they get a featured back. A real need, handled.
Benjamin Morrison at the 37th overall pick is a conviction pick that outran the value. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
A wild overpay on Quinn Ewers in the Round 3 slot, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Somehow Xavier Watts was still sitting there in the 73rd pick, and they pounced on premier safety value. A minor itch, scratched.
Nice patience on Tez Johnson, who had no business lasting to pick 106. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Luke Kandra at Round 5, Pick 5 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
They barely believed it either: Cam Skattebo still on the board at No. 178. The roster fit checks out.
Nick Nash at pick No. 212 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
They paid sticker price for Quincy Riley in pick No. 216, and that is fine. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Thor Griffith well ahead of where he belonged. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
