The board owed the Eagles one, and it paid up: James Williams, the No. 134 name on the board, sitting there at the Round 5 slot like a gift left on the doorstep. Solid and sensible more than spectacular: a B.
They will need Harrell to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it. If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through interior defensive lineman.
Bottom line, more hits than misses and a roster nudged the right way.
Pick-by-Pick
Fair-plus on Jared Verse, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
You do not let a cornerback like Quinyon Mitchell reach the 50th pick and blink. They did not. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Jeremiah Trotter Jr. in the Round 2 slot is exactly on the number, no argument either way. A minor itch, scratched.
Zak Zinter in the 97th overall pick is fair value, right on his grade. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
No edge and no loss on Jaheim Bell in pick No. 137; it is a wash and a sensible one. The roster fit checks out.
They robbed the room for James Williams here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. It fills a real need, too.
Javon Baker at No. 172 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
This one needs a full-page explanation: Jaylen Harrell in Round 6, Pick 3, miles early. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
They jumped the gun on Walter Rouse, taking him earlier than his grade liked. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
