The rest of the league had time to spare on Curtis Jacobs; the Eagles did not wait, grabbing him 25 spots ahead at pick No. 171.
Spending an early pick on OLB-EDGE with edge rusher, interior defensive lineman and other spots open is the decision the grade keeps circling back to. They banked enough surplus on Gore Jr. to cover a lot of smaller sins. The edge rusher spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at.
Add it up and it is a good, unfussy class.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 22nd pick they get a ballhawk on the outside at fair value. Exactly the need they had to hit.
They took Xavier Worthy at par in No. 50, which is nothing to complain about. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
They paid sticker price for Jeremiah Trotter Jr. in the Round 2 slot, and that is fine. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Hard to square with the roster. With positions of obvious need still on the board, Javon Solomon adds an OLB-EDGE and leaves edge rusher, interior defensive lineman and other spots untouched.
No edge and no loss on Jaheim Bell in Round 5, Pick 24; it is a wash and a sensible one. It fills a real need, too.
No drama and no debate, Layden Robinson went about where he belonged in the 170th overall pick. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Curtis Jacobs at the 171st overall pick is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. A luxury on a unit that was already in good shape.
Caedan Wallace is a better player than Round 6, Pick 14 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. A need, and now a little less of one.
A slide stopped in slot 240, with Frank Gore Jr. worth more than the price. The roster fit checks out.
