Somewhere a general manager is explaining how AJ Barner got past him. The Eagles do not have to explain a thing at slot 178.
A whole weekend of picks and interior defensive lineman is somehow still a want. Reaching for Dixon left real value on the table behind him. Cornerback is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it.
In short, they left a little better than they arrived, which is the whole idea.
Pick-by-Pick
In the Round 1 slot they get juice off the edge. The biggest hole, addressed.
Xavier Worthy at the 50th overall pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
They took Jeremiah Trotter Jr. at par in the 53rd pick, which is nothing to complain about. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
They did well to land Trey Benson in pick 97, just ahead of his grade. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Trevor Keegan at pick No. 170. It fills a real need, too.
Johnny Dixon at No. 171 jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
They robbed the room for AJ Barner here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
They paid up for Joe Milton III at Round 6, Pick 14 when waiting would have done the job. A need, and now a little less of one.
Jordan Magee at the 240th pick is right where the board had him, plain and simple. Nice player, but the depth chart did not need him here.
