Call it belief, call it a gut call, but Cooper Beebe at the 52nd pick is 26 spots clear of consensus, and that is the headline.
For all the activity, edge rusher went untouched, which is hard to explain. They banked enough surplus on Baker to cover a lot of smaller sins.
A modest surplus at the table, banked quietly.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but edge rusher.
Pick-by-Pick
Olumuyiwa Fashanu slipping to slot 20 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
By-the-book stuff, J.J. McCarthy at pick 44 squarely in line with his ranking. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Cooper Beebe in Round 2, Pick 20 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Sedrick Van Pran in the Round 3 slot is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
This one needs a full-page explanation: James Williams in pick No. 112, miles early. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Cam Hart at the 150th overall pick. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Jaylan Ford in the 190th pick is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Somehow Javon Baker was still sitting there in pick 198, and they pounced on premier wide receiver value. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Dwight McGlothern. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
