You can lose a draft before you make a pick. The Raiders did it at the trade table, overpaying to chase players the board did not price nearly as high. A D+ that will need time and luck to look better.
The whole projection now runs through Bo Nix; hit there and everything else looks smarter. Wright at that cost is the sort of edge that compounds over a roster. The McCormick pick is the one the value grade keeps tripping over.
They left with edge rusher solved and the rest of the wish list mostly ticked off.
Bottom line, they will be counting on several picks to beat their grades.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick No. 27 they get a passer to set the clock by. A real need, handled.
In pick 32 they get a matchup problem out wide at fair value. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Value with a capital V on Tyler Guyton in slot 44, a genuine coup. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Payton Wilson in the Round 2 slot. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
A straight-up fair deal on Calen Bullock at the 77th pick, value and slot in agreement. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
They paid sticker price for Gabriel Murphy in the 81st overall pick, and that is fine. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
A quiet steal in Round 3, Pick 27: Kris Abrams-Draine for less than the market said. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Dominick Puni at No. 95 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Nice patience on Cam Hart, who had no business lasting to pick No. 111. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
A top-tier running back at a bargain, Jaylen Wright in Round 4, Pick 27, plain and simple. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
They did well to land Cedric Gray in No. 131, just ahead of his grade. A want dressed up as a pick, at a spot they had covered.
They jumped the gun on Mason McCormick, taking him earlier than his grade liked. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
A clean, defensible pick in the 169th pick with a little surplus value in Luke McCaffrey. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
The board had Jalyx Hunt higher than the 185th overall pick, and the S-EDGE fell to them anyway. A pick in search of a role on this roster.
A market-rate tight end, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Erick All. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Tanor Bortolini in pick 223 lands just on the right side of the ledger. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Myles Murphy at Round 7, Pick 9 is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
A tidy little value on Jowon Briggs in pick No. 248, a step better than break-even. A fine player at a spot low on the priority list.
They took Edefuan Ulofoshio at par in the Round 7 slot, which is nothing to complain about. A luxury on a unit that was already in good shape.
