You build a draft on nights like this. Cody Simon had no business being available in pick 193, and the Raiders did the only sane thing and turned in the card.
The edge rusher hole is the one line item this class does not answer. The cost of the Horsley reach is exactly the players who went right after him.
The dealing nudged the ledger their way without much fuss. Cornerback is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but edge rusher.
Pick-by-Pick
R1.10
· Pick 10
· Ashton Jeanty
· RB
· rank 2
In the Round 1 slot they get a featured back, and a steal at that. A clean fit for the roster.
R2.5
· Pick 37
· Jalon Walker
· LB
· rank 23
Jalon Walker at the 37th overall pick is money in the bank, a linebacker taken below his worth. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
R2.9
· Pick 41
· Trey Amos
· CB
· rank 50
Trey Amos at No. 41 jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
R3.4
· Pick 68
· Jayden Higgins
· WR
· rank 68
No edge and no loss on Jayden Higgins in Round 3, Pick 4; it is a wash and a sensible one. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
R4.17
· Pick 119
· Jalen Milroe
· QB
· rank 94
Taking Jalen Milroe in the 119th pick is close to grand larceny; a quarterback that good had no business lasting this long. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
R5.5
· Pick 143
· Malachi Moore
· S
· rank 136
Good price on Malachi Moore in slot 143, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. A minor itch, scratched.
R6.4
· Pick 180
· Willie Lampkin
· OG
· rank 175
Nothing to complain about; Willie Lampkin went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
R6.17
· Pick 193
· Cody Simon
· LB
· rank 126
Circle this one: Cody Simon at pick 193 is a fall that decides a draft. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
R6.37
· Pick 213
· Chase Lundt
· OT
· rank 167
Somehow Chase Lundt was still sitting there in pick No. 213, and they pounced on premier offensive lineman value. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
R6.39
· Pick 215
· Cam Horsley
· DT
· rank 229
They jumped the gun on Cam Horsley, taking him earlier than his grade liked. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
R7.6
· Pick 222
· Caleb Ransaw
· S
· rank 204
Caleb Ransaw in slot 222 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. They added to a strength when a need was still open elsewhere.
