You build a draft on nights like this. Cam Skattebo had no business being available in the 216th pick, and the Raiders did the only sane thing and turned in the card.
With edge rusher, wide receiver and other spots unsolved, spending premium capital on safety is the choice that costs them. That edge rusher hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall. Riley has a lot of ground to make up just to look fairly priced.
Adding Levi Wallace by trade rounds out the weekend beyond the rookies.
Add it up and it is a good, unfussy class.
Pick-by-Pick
Nick Emmanwori in pick No. 20 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
A reach on Jalen Milroe in the 37th pick; the board had better options right there. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Jalon Walker at Round 2, Pick 23 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Dylan Sampson at slot 68 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
A slide stopped in the 73rd overall pick, with Dylan Fairchild worth more than the price. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Hard to square with the roster. With positions of obvious need still on the board, Andrew Mukuba adds a safety and leaves edge rusher, wide receiver and other spots untouched.
Azareye'h Thomas at pick 107 nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Jake Majors in the Round 4 slot is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Sonny Styles at No. 142 is the proof. They added to a strength when a need was still open elsewhere.
They barely believed it either: Nicholas Singleton still on the board at pick No. 179. It fills a real need, too.
Quincy Riley at the Round 6 slot is a conviction pick that outran the value. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
A running back of that caliber at Round 6, Pick 41 is the definition of value, full stop. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Nice patience on Jaishawn Barham, who had no business lasting to slot 222. Stacking talent where they were already deep.
