The trade table was where it all came apart. The Raiders shipped out far more than they hauled back, and no amount of spin dresses up the bill. The good and the questionable cancel out to a C-.
They will need Mahogany to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it. That edge rusher hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall. Whatever else happened, they won the night they took Hart.
They went 5 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for.
A perfectly average weekend, for better and for worse.
Pick-by-Pick
They took Jer'Zhan Newton at par in the 16th pick, which is nothing to complain about. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Nate Wiggins at pick No. 42 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the cornerback. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Sedrick Van Pran at pick 62 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
They paid up for Christian Haynes at slot 84 when waiting would have done the job. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
They let Bucky Irving come to them and pounced at No. 114. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
No drama and no debate, Jamon Dumas-Johnson went about where he belonged in the Round 4 slot. It adds depth where they could use a little.
A reasonable price with a little left over, Cameron Ward in the 151st overall pick. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
A real head-scratcher, Christian Mahogany in Round 5, Pick 31 is miles ahead of his ranking. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
They read the board right and Cam Hart was the payoff at the 192nd overall pick. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
A tidy little value on Jase McClellan in pick No. 251, a step better than break-even. The roster fit checks out.
