There is conviction, and then there is this. The Raiders took Gee Scott Jr. a full 311 picks ahead of where the board had him, an overdraft steep enough that it colors the whole weekend. A weekend to file away and forget, and an F to match.
The Mullings steal is the beam this whole class leans on. So much rides on Shedeur Sanders that the rest of the class almost grades on a curve behind him. They lost the exchange badly enough to drag the whole class down.
They covered a lot of ground and still skipped edge rusher, which is a strange place to end up. It is a win-now wager, and the future is the stake.
In the end, a class that has to defy its grades just to matter.
Pick-by-Pick
By-the-book stuff, Shedeur Sanders at pick 2 squarely in line with his ranking. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
In the 3rd overall pick they get a bell-cow for the offense. A clean fit for the roster.
In the 19th pick they get a true top target at fair value. Exactly the need they had to hit.
The board had cheaper options than TreVeyon Henderson at Round 2, Pick 24, and it noticed. The roster fit checks out.
This one needs a full-page explanation: Quinshon Judkins in pick No. 57, miles early. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
No edge and no loss on Maxwell Hairston in No. 93; it is a wash and a sensible one. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Nick Emmanwori in pick 105 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. A minor itch, scratched.
They barely believed it either: Lathan Ransom still on the board at the Round 5 slot. Stacking talent where they were already deep.
Sonny Styles in pick No. 167 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. A want dressed up as a pick, at a spot they had covered.
Circle this one: Jordan Hancock at No. 183 is a fall that decides a draft. Pure best-available; the position was not exactly begging.
They robbed the room for Cody Simon here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
A big swing on Shilo Sanders at the 216th pick, well ahead of any board in the building. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
They reached a country mile for Gee Scott Jr. at Round 7, Pick 4, and the board is aghast. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
They will replay Kalel Mullings at the 245th overall pick for years; that is how good the value is. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Value said wait; Germie Bernard in pick No. 256 says they were not listening. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
