There is reaching, and then there is Blake Watson at No. 229. The Raiders jumped the board by 58 and dared it to prove them wrong. More right than wrong, and a B+ to match.
Every deal seemed to tilt their way, which is not luck. The edge rusher spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at. The Raiders clearly valued win-now help, adding bodies who have done it before.
The roster is better shaped than it was, with cornerback chief among the fixes.
All told, a draft that does its job without fuss, and there is real value in that.
Pick-by-Pick
Terrion Arnold at Round 1, Pick 23 nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Good price on Jordan Morgan in the 44th overall pick, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
A market-rate cornerback, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Jarvis Brownlee Jr.. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Myles Murphy in slot 208 is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
They reached into another round for Sam Hartman, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. A need, and now a little less of one.
They talked themselves into Blake Watson at the 229th pick, and the board did not agree. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
A reasonable price with a little left over, Trevin Wallace in slot 239. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
