The Raiders spent the pick that matters most on J.J. McCarthy, and a roster that has been waiting on a passer can start to take shape.
McCarthy has a lot of ground to make up just to look fairly priced. If one pick saves this weekend, it is Devonshire. They will regret leaving edge rusher for another day if the season turns on it.
So much rides on J.J. McCarthy that the real verdict is a season or two away.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick 13 they get the face of the franchise, though the board says they badly overpaid. A clean fit for the roster.
Edgerrin Cooper at pick No. 44 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Blake Fisher in the Round 3 slot is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
By-the-book stuff, Tyler Davis at slot 113 squarely in line with his ranking. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Roger Rosengarten at Round 5, Pick 11 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
They barely believed it either: M.J. Devonshire still on the board at the 210th overall pick. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
The board fumbled Daequan Hardy all the way to the 221st pick, and they scooped it up. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Andrew Raym at No. 225 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
A market-rate tight end, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Tip Reiman. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
