The phones were a trap the Raiders kept walking into, shipping out surplus on nearly every deal. The board pushed back all weekend, and the D is the result.
They have staked the next five years on Michael Penix Jr., which is the only story that really matters here. Every board in the league had Robinson lower, and that gap is the story. Leaving edge rusher unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall.
Add it up and it is a weekend the front office will hope everyone forgets, edge rusher very much included.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick 13 they get their quarterback of the future. A clean fit for the roster.
No edge and no loss on T.J. Tampa in the 44th pick; it is a wash and a sensible one. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
A quiet steal in Round 3, Pick 13: Patrick Paul for less than the market said. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Nothing to complain about; Will Shipley went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
This one needs a full-page explanation: Layden Robinson in the Round 5 slot, miles early. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Evan Williams in pick No. 223. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
