Start where it matters. The Raiders took J.J. McCarthy to run the offense for the next decade, and every other decision this weekend bends around that one. A dependable weekend that grades out a B-.
Reaching for Taylor III left real value on the table behind him. For all the activity, edge rusher went untouched, which is hard to explain.
They left with cornerback solved and the rest of the wish list mostly ticked off. Almost all the early capital went to that side of the ball.
In short, they left a little better than they arrived, which is the whole idea.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick 13 they get their guy under center for the next decade, reach and all. A real need, handled.
No drama and no debate, T.J. Tampa went about where he belonged in pick No. 55. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Patrick Paul in No. 77 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Leonard Taylor III. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
They took Luke McCaffrey at par in the 148th overall pick, which is nothing to complain about. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Sataoa Laumea in slot 158 is fair value, right on his grade. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Cody Schrader at the 198th pick jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Jaylan Ford at Round 6, Pick 33 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
They liked Evan Williams enough to skip the value, taking him in the 223rd pick. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
A market-rate offensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Garret Greenfield. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
