The rest of the league will want that one back. Ricky Pearsall tumbling to the Raiders in pick 113 is a gift they did not have to think twice about. The board rewarded a patient, disciplined weekend with a A-.
The dealing alone would carry a lesser class. They will answer for taking DT-EDGE early while edge rusher, tight end and other spots went begging. The edge rusher hole is the one line item this class does not answer.
The imported veterans give this class a floor the draft picks could not on their own.
The kind of weekend a front office frames and hangs on the wall.
Pick-by-Pick
In the Round 1 slot they get a press-man option on the boundary. Exactly the need they had to hit.
A straight-up fair deal on J.J. McCarthy at Round 2, Pick 12, value and slot in agreement. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Cooper Beebe at the 83rd overall pick. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
They bypassed pressing needs at edge rusher, tight end and other spots to take Maason Smith, a DT-EDGE that was not the priority.
Somehow Ricky Pearsall was still sitting there in pick No. 113, and they pounced on premier wide receiver value. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Sataoa Laumea in pick 127 lands just on the right side of the ledger. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
A cornerback of that caliber at slot 159 is the definition of value, full stop. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Javon Baker at No. 190 nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
A quiet steal in the Round 7 slot: Rasheen Ali for less than the market said. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Nothing to complain about; Jha'Quan Jackson went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
