The rest of the league had time to spare on Xavier Thomas; the Raiders did not wait, grabbing him 85 spots ahead at slot 77. No fireworks, but a solid B-.
Jayden Daniels is the bet, and the class will be judged on how it pays off. They banked enough surplus on Thomas Jr. to cover a lot of smaller sins.
They covered a lot of ground and still skipped cornerback, which is a strange place to end up.
A competent weekend that does not make headlines and does not need to.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 13th overall pick they get a long-term answer under center. A real need, handled.
Brian Thomas Jr. in Round 2, Pick 12 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
This one needs a full-page explanation: Xavier Thomas in No. 77, miles early. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
The board had Javon Foster higher than pick No. 135, and the offensive lineman fell to them anyway. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Christian Jones in the Round 5 slot is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Curtis Jacobs in pick 208. It adds depth where they could use a little.
By-the-book stuff, Jordan Magee at the 223rd pick squarely in line with his ranking. A want dressed up as a pick, at a spot they had covered.
They let Nathaniel Watson come to them and pounced at the 229th overall pick. Pure best-available; the position was not exactly begging.
