Somewhere a general manager is explaining how Sebastian Castro got past him. The Raiders do not have to explain a thing at the 143rd overall pick. Call it a sensible B, earned the boring way.
The cost of the Webb reach is exactly the players who went right after him. The trade table is where this weekend went wrong. For all the activity, edge rusher went untouched, which is hard to explain.
A competent weekend that does not make headlines and does not need to.
Pick-by-Pick
In slot 27 they get a No. 1 receiver at a price that makes it sweeter. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Omarion Hampton at No. 37 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Circle this one: Malaki Starks at pick No. 68 is a fall that decides a draft. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Zy Alexander at the 91st overall pick is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Jordan Phillips in the 108th pick is exactly on the number, no argument either way. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Taking Jalen Milroe in Round 4, Pick 27 is close to grand larceny; a quarterback that good had no business lasting this long. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
You do not let a safety like Sebastian Castro reach pick 143 and blink. They did not. Stacking talent where they were already deep.
A straight-up fair deal on Jay Higgins at the Round 6 slot, value and slot in agreement. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Clay Webb in slot 203 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
They took Carson Vinson at par in the 213th pick, which is nothing to complain about. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
A safety of that caliber at the 215th overall pick is the definition of value, full stop. They added to a strength when a need was still open elsewhere.
