You can lose a draft before you make a pick. The Raiders did it at the trade table, overpaying to chase players the board did not price nearly as high. The board pushed back all weekend, and the D- is the result.
Carson Beck is the bet, and the class will be judged on how it pays off. On value alone, Leonard makes the weekend a net positive.
Leaving tight end unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall. The cost of the Jackson reach is exactly the players who went right after him.
The verdict is not kind, and fairly so; this class has a hill to climb.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 22nd pick they get a passer to set the clock by. A real need, handled.
A clean, defensible pick in Round 2, Pick 20 with a little surplus value in Jordan Burch. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
A conviction pick on Domani Jackson at the 57th overall pick that the board grades a round light. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Evan Stewart in pick No. 83 is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Donovan Jackson at the Round 3 slot is the proof. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
They barely believed it either: Nick Emmanwori still on the board at pick 113. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Raheim Sanders at slot 124 nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Riley Leonard in No. 158 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
They paid sticker price for Ricky White III in slot 179, and that is fine. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Jaydn Ott in pick No. 196 is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
They took Javontez Spraggins at par in the Round 6 slot, which is nothing to complain about. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
A tidy little value on Xavier Truss in No. 214, a step better than break-even. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Fair-plus on Denver Harris, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
